“Tough Loss”: Trudeau, Liberals react after key Montreal riding lost in byelection defeat
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Liberal cabinet ministers reacted Monday after suffering another devastating byelection blow, with the loss of the Montreal-area riding of LaSalle-Émard—Verdun to the Bloc Québécois.
Trudeau said it “would have been nicer” to have held on to the former Liberal stronghold, but added that his government has “more work to do” to sell Canadians on their message ahead of the upcoming election. He added that Canadians need to “understand what’s at stake.”
Government House Leader Karina Gould echoed Trudeau’s assessment of the upcoming election, saying it would be “very consequential.”
“It was a tough loss for us, but just because you lose the battle doesn’t mean you don’t continue the fight,” she added.
Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Liberals must listen to Canadians and remain “humble,” while Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Liberals had heard Canadians “loud and clear.
