Canada abstains from UN vote on Israel’s “unlawful presence” in Gaza, West Bank
Canada abstained Wednesday during a vote in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on a nonbinding Palestinian resolution demanding Israel end its “unlawful presence” in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Bob Rae, Canada’s permanent representative to the UN, explained the decision to abstain, telling those in the chamber that Canada “cannot support a resolution where on party, the state of Israel, is held solely responsible for the conflict.”
“In addition, we are concerned that this resolution contains language that aligns with boycott, divestment, sanctions – which Canada firmly opposes,” he said.
